I altered these cute tiny roof tiles in order to give them as a gift appreciation to my daughter's teachers. They already have them and both loved them :)
wood blocks (I used the legs from an old cheap ikea table)
jigsaw
The whole idea came when I saw the wooden legs of an old cheap ikea table standing at the corner of our warehouse. They had the perfect size to create some houses. I knew that we weren't going to use this table never again, so with no second thought I cut them in pieces with the jigsaw. I didn't do any measuring, just started cutting in different sizes.
Next thing to do was to use the sand paper to soften the edges and make them look old.
After that, I used the pyrographer to create the doors and windows. That took a lot of time but it really worth it! If you don't have a pyrographer you can simply use paints to draw doors and windows.
Then I started painting the houses.
I made my own Glaze paints by mixing in the Clear Glaze Medium my favorite arte-pigment colors.
Again, no measuring at all, just keep in mind that the more color you add, the more opaque look you get or add more Glaze for Extra Transparency. Just play with the paints and have fun!
I didn't use any container to blend the paints, I just added some Clear Glaze on the corner of the house and spread the pigment in there. It's pretty easy to apply it, the paint is so smooth, I just love it! I kept adding some more pigment here and there and just blending with the paintbrush and when I was happy with the result I let it dry naturally and kept going with the next house and so on...
I used on three of the five houses blue/green shades of Primary Elements pigments and on one house the Fuzzy Peach shade. I also painted two houses with White Heavy Gesso and all the roofs with Black Gesso.
Last and very important step for me was to sand all the edges of the houses with sandpaper, to create an aged look. I also used it on all the sides of the houses to remove most of the gloss of the paints.
I really love the result, they are already standing on my shelf :)
7Dots Studio 'Domestic Goddess' collection word sticker
black frame
So, let's get started.
First step was to paint the wooden sticks with the Silks. I chose some of my favorite colors in green, blue and grey shades and used a paintbrush to apply them on the sticks. They dry pretty quickly and I love how rich the colors look after they are dry!
I also painted some of the sticks with white gesso.
After they were dry I used the craft glue to glue them down randomly.
I wanted to keep it simple with a clean and clear look, so I didn't use any paint on the background.
The only thing to do after the sticks were in place, was to glue a word sticker.
That was pretty much all! I really love the finished look and that Summer feeling it gives at my wall of art :)
I feel very honored to be a guest designer at More Than Wordschallenge blog!
Thank you so much for the invitation, I really appreciate it!
I created a canvas inspired by the lovely April moodboard and used the word 'escape' as the challenge required...
I got inspired not only by the beautiful colors of the moodboard, but also the flowers and the black and white tree and tried to incorporate all these elements on my project.
I therefor used flowers in many colors, a chipboard tree which I painted black and white, wooded sticks, as well a keyhole, out of which all the flowers 'Escape'... I love how they peek through the rusty metal keyhole, as to represent the beauty of nature escaping from an enclosed secret garden.
...and of course I made especially for MTW fans a video on how I used many mixed media techniques on my canvas to make the background crackle and shimmer, layers upon layers of different colors and products to add depth and texture.
Today I'm hosting the Finnabair blog with an altered wooden case.
I created it for my brother. I haven't given it to him yet, it's a present, actually a surprise, so shhhhhhh...don't tell him anything yet :) He's an electronic and his lab is called '01'.
The mechanical numbers are the perfect size to write the name of the lab in the center of the composition. The new mechanical rusty and steampunk gears, the Barn Stars and Mini Hardware were also a perfect match for this project, I just love them there!
I started by gluing electronic plackets (I got them from my dad - he is also an electronic) all over the surface with the new silicone brush 1' and Heavy Body Gel.
This Gel is a very strong glue and I highly recommend it if you need to glue heavy or metal embellishment on your project like I did.
Next step was to cover everything with Black Gesso. It creates a beautiful and interesting base to work on it, the paints love it :)
When it was all dry I used some acrylic paints to color everything: opal magic blue-gold, silver spoon and light patina and also Emerald Green, Black Berry and Deep Waters from the new colors.
To add more texture I used the Platinum Crackle Paste here and there and used the same acrylic colors to paint it over when it was dry.
I also added Bronze Micro Beads and 2 colors of the Mica Flakes set. I glued them with 3D Gloss Gel.
The next step was the most exciting of all the process. I used the Rust Pastes. I couldn't wait to use them when I first saw this amazing product! I have to tell you, this is my new favorite 'must have'. The rust look is so awesome and feels and looks real!!! I absolutely adore the result!
Last thing I did was to spread two shades of Mica powder (Rust and Deep Water) with a paintbrush all over the project. I sprayed some water and dried it with a heat gun. I think this last step was very important because it unified all the colors and textures.
Here are some more details...
You can see the whole process in my video below.
